Who are Ofqual?
The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) is the independent regulator for qualifications, examinations, and assessments in England.
Established in April 2010 under the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009 and governed by the Education Act 2011, Ofqual ensures that every regulated qualification upholds consistent standards, fairness, and credibility across the education system.
Operating as a non-ministerial government department, Ofqual reports directly to Parliament, maintaining independence from government influence. The organisation is based in Coventry and employs around 300 staff members dedicated to overseeing qualification quality and integrity.
Ofqual’s primary role is to regulate qualifications, exams and assessments in England. It's main responsibilities include:
- Maintaining standards: Ensuring that qualifications are consistent, reliable, and of high quality.
- Fairness and integrity: Making sure exams and assessments are fair and secure.
- Monitoring awarding bodies: Overseeing Awarding Organisations that provide qualifications to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Protecting Learners: Safeguarding the interests of Learners and the public by ensuring qualifications are credible and valued.
By monitoring Awarding Organisations and their processes, our regulators ensure that every qualification listed on its Register meets their Conditions for Recognition.
