iPET Network Level 3 Award in an Introduction to Reptile Keeping – Qualification Number 610/6316/2 (link to qualification on Ofqual register) 

The iPET Network Level 3 Award in an Introduction to Reptile Keeping has been developed to meet the needs of Learners who are interested in gaining knowledge of the correct care and husbandry requirements of reptiles in captive environments. It is suitable for those with limited existing qualifications or experience in reptile care, who wish to gain a solid foundation in the subject. It is particularly suitable for those working or volunteering in animal care settings, individuals looking to gain employment such as in retail, individuals considering reptile ownership and others in related roles who want to explore the subject. 

Learners will gain fundamental knowledge of reptile biology, and ownership responsibilities, including legal and ethical considerations. Additionally, the qualification covers the principles of effective enclosure design, husbandry practices, nutrition, common husbandry errors and strategies for avoiding or resolving them.

Throughout the qualification, a strong emphasis is placed on safe handling, understanding signs of stress and ill-health and promoting good welfare practices.

Upon successful completion of the qualification, Learners will have a strong foundation to progress to further study or work in reptile or exotic animal care.

This qualification has been designed to enable Learners to:

• Understand the general classification of reptiles.

• Understand the welfare and ethical issues of keeping reptiles.

• Understand the safety and legal requirements of keeping reptiles.

• Understand the basic husbandry requirements of reptiles.

• Know appropriate reptile handling techniques.

• Understand signs of good and ill health and common diseases in reptiles.

This qualification consists of the following theoretical units:

395: Introduction to Reptile Biology, Welfare and Ethics

396: Introduction to Reptile Husbandry

EDUCATION FOR PEOPLE, FOR PETS, FOR THE FUTURE

Candidates need to have a level of understanding to be able to work at Level 3. Must be able to complete the assessments for this qualification in English. There are no other entry requirements.
